When to Repair Plumbing and When to Replace Your Plumbing

The plumbing in your home is something you use every single day, usually without thinking much about it. From flushing the toilet to running the washing machine, everything water or pipe-related means it’s part of your home’s plumbing.

Over time, it’s natural for some things to break, and for repairs to be carried out. Sometimes, however, things go beyond repair and a replacement is the only choice.

At D A Gas Plumbing & Heating, we understand having work carried out on your home’s plumbing can be inconvenient and a cost nobody wants, even when it’s necessary! With this in mind, we always try to repair your plumbing, and often this can be faster as well as cheaper. However, if the same repairs are needed again and again, it may end up costing you more than a replacement, so we’ll always advise on what we think is best, leaving you to make an informed and educated decision about what to do.

Plumbing in your home

Here are some of the examples of what may need repairing or replacing at points in your home:

  • Pipes that are leaking
  • Washing machines
  • Dishwashers
  • Old or leaking taps
  • Toilets and showers - from blockages to leaks
  • Water pressure
  • Outside taps

To repair or replace?

That is the question! We regularly take the view that it depends on the level of repair required and how much time and money this will take versus how expensive the plumbing element was originally. For example, while it might be normal to repair a washing machine once or twice, if it keeps happening you will literally end up paying more in repairs than just buying a brand new washing machine complete with a guarantee.

On the other hand, if you have a leaky shower, it will definitely be worth trying to repair it and resolve the issue, rather than forking out for the expense of a whole new unit.

Calling a plumber versus DIY

While not everyone is a professional plumber, we understand there are certain circumstances where some homeowners will want to attempt some plumbing repairs themselves. We have nothing against this, and if you have the knowledge, time and confidence to try, there’s usually no harm.

For example, if your toilet bowl is loose it’s pretty straightforward to tighten it by yourself. You may also be able to replace common parts in your cistern with a trip to your local DIY store. However, if the problem is more complex - and especially if you’re not actually sure what it is - it’s always best to call a professional plumber. We’ll use our qualifications, skills and experience to quickly identify an issue and carry out a repair or advise on a replacement. This can save you time and even money, as attempting complicated plumbing without experience can cause further damage and expense.
