Signs Your Toilet is in Need of Repair

Believe it or not, your toilet is one of your most valuable possessions. Its put to use every day by you and your family and the thought of life without it is not very pleasant!

If you’re experiencing any issues with your toilet, it’s important to investigate what’s going on to try to prevent damage from problems such as leaks. But it’s not always easy to know what’s wrong. Below we’ve written a short guide to identifying common toilet issues and how to resolve them.

Common issues with toilets

Blocked toilet

Most toilets get blocked at one time or another, and though dusting down the plunger to deal with it is no fun, it’s usually simple to resolve. Sometimes, though, toilets keep getting blocked - no matter what you do.

If this happens, it's usually a sign of an underlying problem. Particularly in older toilets, the inside mechanics get worn out and require replacement parts to resolve the issue.

Wobbly toilet

If your toilet wobbles when you sit on it, it’s likely that the screws at its base have loosened. While this in itself is simple to resolve through tightening them, you should try to ascertain why it happened. Sometimes it can be a sign that there’s damage underneath, such as a damp floor from a leak and this will need addressing. Check the area and floor all around the toilet and contact a plumber if in doubt.

Toilet won’t stop running

As well as being a waste of water, if your toilet is constantly running, it's a sure sign that something’s not right. Often a part at the bottom of the tank will need replacing, such as the fill valve or the rubber flapper. A plumber can assess this and then advise whether a new part is likely to fix the problem or if it’s time to consider a whole new toilet unit.

Cracked toilet

One of the most common causes of leaking toilets is cracks. While porcelain is very hard wearing, it can still become damaged, or weaken over time. Cracks in the porcelain can cause regular leaking around the base of your toilet, which can in turn lead to flood damage in your home. It’s important to address cracks as soon as you spot them to prevent the spread of damage.

Inefficient toilet

While you may not notice this, older toilets need a lot more water to operate than newer ones. So if your toilet is old and then requires a repair, you may save money in the long-term if you just replace it instead. This is because newer toilets work much more efficiently, with low flush options that both reduce your water bill and help lower water and energy wastage.
