Pros and Cons of a Combi Boiler

A combi boiler is a gas boiler that works as a single combined unit, so you don’t need a separate hot water tank in your home.

They are considered extremely efficient, and because of this can save you money on your energy bills. They don’t suit every home, though, so we’ve written about the pros and cons of combi boilers to help you make the right decision before installation.

What are the advantages of a combi boiler?

Combi boilers heat water immediately, as soon as you need it, so no more waiting!

Because they don’t require a tank or immersion heater they are cheaper to install, so you’ll spend less than you would on other types of boilers.

There’s no waste, as combi boilers only heat as much water as you need, rather than leaving it in a tank. This can save you money every month on your energy bill.

They take up less room in your home than other boilers, as well as saving you space from no water tank.

Combi boilers can improve your home’s EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating thanks to their efficiency. This can help when selling your home.

You’re less likely to get a build-up of sludge and debris from a combi boiler as they power water directly from the mains rather than leaving it in a tank.

...and what are the disadvantages  of a combi boiler?

Combi boilers can only send hot water to one source at a time, so you can’t have a shower while someone runs the hot water tap in the kitchen. This also makes them unsuitable for homes with more than one bathroom.

If the mains pressure in your area isn’t strong, your combi boiler is unlikely to perform well. Be sure to check this before you commit.

Unless you have an electric shower, you may be left without hot water should your combi boiler ever break down. With other boiler types, you can get still get hot water from your immersion heater.

It’s not possible to have a power shower if you have a combi boiler. This is because the pressure is set by the mains and can’t be altered.
