How to Keep Your Boiler in Good Condition During the Winter

During winter, when the weather is cold and so are we - our boilers are needed more than ever. While occasional repairs to your boiler are inevitable, especially when it ages, there are things you can do to help keep it healthy during the winter months.

At DA Gas, Heating & Plumbing, we’ve witnessed every boiler issue imaginable, so have written this guide to help you keep your boiler feeling tip top throughout the colder months.

Have your boiler serviced

Boiler manufacturers recommend that you get your boiler serviced annually and we agree the benefits of doing this are huge. As well as validating any warranty, a service helps your boiler to perform to the best of its ability and work more efficiently. This both saves you money on your energy bills and keeps your boiler in great condition for when you need it most. Getting your boiler serviced during or at the end of summer works well for many people, as it’s good timing for the upcoming colder weather and means you’ll know your boiler is fully prepared!

Check your boiler’s pressure

If your pressure is too low or too high then it means your boiler needs some help. You can check it yourself through the pressure gauge, which should be sitting at around 1.5 bar. If it’s below this, it will need repressurising and if it’s above, it may mean your radiators need bleeding.

Bleed your radiators

You can bleed your radiators yourself with a radiator key, and in doing so you will help your boiler sit at the right pressure, as well as improve the heat they give out. If you notice cold spots or if your radiators are slow to heat up, bleeding them will probably help.

Insulate your pipes

While this may sound like a big job, insulating your pipes is actually fairly straightforward and something you can do yourself. Measure the size of your pipes then buy lagging from your local DIY store. These foam tubes can be fitted around your pipes which will help prevent them from freezing over in winter.

Have your system powerflushed

Powerflushing is when a Gas Safe registered engineer injects water at high velocity through your heating system. This removes the build-up of dust, sludge and debris that can cause your radiators, pipes and boiler to corrode. It usually only needs doing every five or so years, and can make a huge difference to the health of your central heating system.
