Does a New Boiler Help Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

The technology we use every day has enriched our lives in many ways. From safe and clean water, to convenient transport, to heating our homes, we all benefit from modern advances. However, there is a downside to this and it’s a big one: the energy crisis. Most technology involves energy use and a lot of this creates harmful emissions like CO2 gases which are damaging our planet at an alarming rate. From drastic climate change to species losing their homes and risking extinction, we all know the world is at crisis point and we need to make changes before it’s too late.

There are many ways to do this, even though at times it can feel like a mountain too high to climb. From improved reporting in the media, our awareness is better and governments are now trying to encourage both industries and individuals to take more responsibility.

While we can feel a little powerless and overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done, every one of us can make a difference - and together these small changes can have a hugely positive impact.

But where to start? Well, at home.

The difference reducing energy in your home can make

While some energy use in undoubtedly necessary, a lot of what we use is down to habit. Because most of us use much of our energy in our homes, it’s where we can probably make the biggest difference.

It’s easy to fall into bad habits with energy use and we’re all guilty of it from time to time. From leaving a light on to forgetting to turn the heating off, we can all reduce our carbon footprint straight away just by thinking a little more carefully about our use.

But in addition to this, we can make a big difference if we commit to some other changes in how we use energy, such as:

Upgrading appliances

Switching to a dishwasher or washing machine that’s A-rated for energy efficiency means you still get clean clothes and dishes, but without using excess energy. It’s a win-win for both the environment and for you as you’ll enjoy speedier washes and lowered heating bills too.

Lowering the thermostat

By setting your thermostat to two or three degrees lower on a permanent basis, you can immediately reduce the energy your central heating system uses. The chances are you’ll quickly adapt to slightly less heat, but just adding a pair of socks or a jumper if you’re cold can easily bridge the warmth gap in your home.

Having a Smart meter installed

Sometimes it’s hard to start making a difference with your energy use when you can’t really see the impact of it. Smart meters are great as they let you take better control of your energy use, allowing you to see what you are using really clearly. Most energy suppliers will install Smart meters in your home upon request.

Having shorter showers and using economy settings

If you have a shower for just a minute less each day, you’ll use 365 minutes less energy throughout the year. You’ll cut down on your water use as well, and help reduce the cost of your bills as well as your carbon footprint.

Switching to an A-rated boiler

This is what can potentially make the most difference in your home, as new A-rated boilers can be 90% more efficient than older models. Because of this they can run on a lot less energy and recycle some of the fuel they use. This means less CO2 emissions, while you still get to heat your home and have plenty of hot water for showers and baths.

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that if everyone in the UK were to upgrade their older boiler to an A-rated condensing boiler and were also a little more careful with their energy use, approximately 6.7 million less tonnes of CO2 gases would be produced. This is a huge number, and shows the difference individuals can make when you look at the figures collectively.
