Do I switch my heating off before my holiday?

Deciding whether to leave your heating on or off when you go on holiday can be a hard decision. When you're soaking up the sun on holiday, the last thing you want to worry about is what is going on with your central heating system! With worries of burst pipes if you turn it off- but gas leaks if you leave it on, it can be hard to know what to do. Follow our handy guide to solve all your holiday heating problems!

Is your holiday in the summer?

If your holiday is in the summertime, you have nothing to worry about. If you normally wouldn't have your heating switched on, there's no use in switching it on when you go on holiday- as this will just waste energy and have no benefit on your home. The warm weather will keep your home safe from any potential issues, so you don't need to worry.

Or is it in the winter?

If your holiday is in the winter (or any time of year when you rely on your heating), we recommend you leave it on during your holiday. The main reason for this is that it keeps your pipes warm and active, so they are much less likely to burst or freeze while you are away. As well as this, it means you won't be returning from your lovely sunny holiday to an icy cold home!

There's no need to have your heating turned up as high as you usually have it, so feel free to lower it to around 16 degrees. This will save you money and energy, while still doing the same job in your home. 

You shouldn't worry about your boiler leaking gas while you are away, as it is very unlikely this will happen. However, for some extra peace of mind, we recommend you booking your home in for a boiler service.
